CANONICAL CONSULTING

ParTnering with the acna to bring healthy governance to every level of the church

For nearly three decades, the American Anglican Council played a formative role in shaping faithful Anglican governance in North America and beyond. From its early leadership in the formation of the Anglican Church in North America, the AAC has provided trusted canonical guidance at every level of the Province. This work has included organizing and advising the ACNA Governance Task Force; assisting dioceses and bishops in drafting and revising constitutions and canons; helping parishes establish clear, functional bylaws; guiding ecclesiastical courts and parties through complex disciplinary matters; and offering canonical support to global Anglican bodies such as GAFCON and Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches in their ongoing work of reform and renewal within the Anglican Communion.

Canonical consulting within the AAC is now led by the Director of Anglican Governance Ministries, The Rev. Cn. Andrew Rowell, who serves bishops, dioceses, clergy, parishes, and lay leaders across the Province. Drawing on deep experience in Anglican polity, constitutional development, and disciplinary processes, Canon Rowell provides principled, pastoral, and practical guidance rooted in Scripture, the historic formularies of the Church, and the canons of the ACNA. The AAC’s work was strengthened and continued by Bishop Phil Ashey, who, as AAC President, contributed his canonical wisdom to begin our consulting ministry, along with the Anglican Legal Society. He continues to use that knowledge within the College of Bishops. Together, this ministry equips Anglican leaders to pursue faithful governance that supports mission, safeguards unity, and upholds the good order of Christ’s Church.
