Anglican Perspectives

“Evangelism?  You’ve got to be kidding!  At our age and church size, where would we even begin?”

Neither age nor size of congregation matter when it comes to fulfilling Christ’s Great Commission to “make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:16-20), according to Archbishop Ben Kwashi, Archbishop of Jos, Nigeria and the new General Secretary of the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON).

I had the pleasure of spending time with Archbishop Ben a few weeks ago in Martha’s Vineyard, MA. We had wonderful discussions about the future of GAFCON, the American Anglican Council’s new Bishops Leadership Summit and more.  I also had an opportunity to interview ++Ben on his new book Evangelism and Mission: Biblical and Strategic Insights for the Church Today.

Among the questions I asked him was the following. “Imagine you are speaking to the rector and leaders of a typical congregation in the Anglican Church in North America.  It’s a church of about 30-50 people, almost all of them over 55, with few young families and children, worshipping in a leased space.  What would you say to them about the first steps they could take in beginning to evangelize their neighbors and share the transforming love of Jesus Christ?”

I won’t steal his thunder. I will say that he shares from the Bible, church historian Lactantius, his friend Archbishop Mouneer Anis (whom he quotes as saying “as Gospel teachers we are not cooks, we are nutritionists”) practical tips from his book, and his own personal experience. I hope you will catch both the passion and the possibilities for how you can begin to reach your community, your neighbors, and especially children, with the transforming love of Jesus Christ!
